CRUCIBLES
Crucible life is variable with type of crucible material, type of
melter and atmospheric exposure. Remember the crucible is a
reservoir for oxide and flux buildup. If the buildup is too great,
it will cause more silicon to surface, fighting off these
accumulated oxides, thus compounding the problem. Pure graphite
crucibles seem to be the most susceptible to breakdown. Many
electric melters use these crucibles. We recommend clay-graphite for
gas melting. They provide excellent wall strength for hand pouring.
Please follow the manufacturer's recommendation for your machine.
