Precious Metals have always been an inflation hedge for the world economy. During times of inflation gold has always been a measuring stick for real value. When economic inflation occurs gold rises in value. When fears of economic downturn occur gold rises in value.

We are all experiencing economic conditions that we have not seen since the great depression of 1929. The Government is printing currency in an attempt to assist the displaced workers and homeowners who lost their property to bank foreclosures. Hopefully these stimulus measures will allow the stock markets and world economies find a bottom. The long term effect of the increase of currency is inflation. Inflation normally causes the price of gold to increase.

Many financial planners recommend a 5% to 10% investment of accumulated assets in gold. Some refer to it as insurance against economic catastrophe.

The other precious metals do not always rise or fall in conjunction with gold. Silver, for example has a more abundant world supply. Some feel the price of silver is low compared to gold, which historically kept a higher ratio. Silver at its current prices might be a better investment for lower investment costs and larger precious metal content.

Platinum and palladium usually rise and fall on industrial demand. These metals are mainly used in the automobile industry for catalytic converters. Currently auto unit volumes are down as is the price of these metals. These metals would be more speculative than gold and silver.
